As the energy efficiency revolution attempts to win over our hearts and minds, it’s very clear that, unlike the iNeed gadget phenomenon, there’s nothing tangible or warm and fuzzy about being energy efficient to show off to your friends. This lack of “cool quotient” among peers means a big challenge for marketers faced with making “air sealing your home” sound sexy.
To illustrate that energy efficiency needs to be a “Show Me” excericise, we’ve seen people ignore the less glamorous options like adding insulation or air sealing and pursue the closest thing that the EE industry can call “bling,” the Solar Panel.
Further, one of the biggest obstacles of customer engagement is the fact that energy efficiency isn’t visible. It’s what happens behind the scenes, or what your efficient home, isn’t doing — using energy. That is why I was taken aback by this ingenious way of adding a visual characteristic to saving energy. Carbon as BLACK BALLOONS. Brilliant ideas like this need to continue to find their way to the mainstream.
