WIRED chimes in on what Environmentalism should really be about. Although I don’t agree with everything, like going “all in” with nuclear energy rather than continuing our wind, solar, wave power technologies…it’s well worth reading.    Like most arguments, it’s difficult to make black and white. For instance, their claim that city slickers have less of a carbon footprint due to public transportation, shared living spaces, etc…but how much carbon is used to fly, ship, drive their romantic dinner to their plates? Where are the urban farms? They don’t mention this…

Eugene Does Sustainable Olympic Trials

Gotta hand it to my home town for stepping up while they have the spotlight with how to throw a sustainable party.  Love the all-compostable table service…

“Plans include purchasing wind-generated electricity from the Eugene Water & Electric Board to power the event — an estimated 200,000 kilowatt hours over 10 days. Caterers and food venders have committed to using all-compostable table service — a move that should allow athletes, media, volunteers and fans to dump their leftovers — food, plate, straw and even ketchup containers — into the compost bin with one easy plop.” — The Register Guard

Death to the Trucking Industry?  It seems like their leaders should be at the fore of researching alternative fuels in order to survive. I mean…$4 Diesel?“Rising diesel fuel prices tend to be passed on to shippers as fuel surcharges, with the highest occurring in California. To combat driver shortage, major players have acquired smaller operators in efforts to increase their driver pool, while others have increased wages in order to retain and attract drivers.” -Reuters

Recycled Newspaper as housing? I went to visit the Cal Poly Regenerative Studies campus this weekend and came away impressed with these Adobe homes made from PaperCrete and reclaimed wood that even include green “drought tolerant” roofs for optimal insulation. These expirmental homes are to be implemented in Tijuana as low cost sustainable housing.

Maybe going green will prove a passing fad and will lose steam after a few years, just as it did in the 1980s, when Ronald Reagan took down Jimmy Carter’s solar panels from the roof of the White House.
— The White House had solar panels in the 80’s? Another piece of evidence, along with Madonna and neon, that we were on to something…
